NEW YORK, NY (November 22, 2012)—Towel & Basin in conjunction with its urban initiative, the Center for Urban Strategy Development, has launched the Towel & Basin Emergency Relief Fund to help local neighborhood groups, health facilities, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based agencies in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy recover and rebuild their capacity to continue serving their constituents and fulfill their missions

“The wreckage and despair from Hurricane Sandy is staggering, and the recovery will be long,” said David Best, Towel & Basin president. “What has been less recognized is that local organizations, community centers, health facilities, educational and religious institutions were also devastated by this superstorm. We want these kinds of organizations -- so essential to a community’s vitality and health – to get the assistance they need to rebuild their capacity to once again serve and fulfill their missions.”

Towel & Basin is working with civic, nonprofit and religious leaders to deliver resources quickly and effectively.

Many of the hardest-hit areas are neighborhoods where Towel & Basin’s partners already have a presence and infrastructure. That means the funds can move quickly to bring targeted assistance to those overlooked or underserved groups that, when they recover, will provide the critical services vital to the long term recovery of their communities.

The new fund builds on Towel & Basin’s experience over two decades in disaster relief and recovery, both in US and international settings and with complex humanitarian emergencies.

“Our aim is, with our partners, to get help to local leaders, community influencers and organizations that have been overlooked or underserved,” Best said. “The infrastructure is there. We are ready to get going.”
